Tips for Family:
- Don’t expect perfection: Your child might also use a different technique to complete the task (Ex: based more on tactile cues)
- Be patient: It may take your child more time to finish the activity. Perhaps start small – with a part of the process rather than the entire task.
- Make it a routine and an expectation. Consistency helps to set the skill into their daily routine.
- Ask your TVI for help: If you’re seeing your child struggle, talk to your TVI at school or the Children’s and Transition Program Coordinator at the Lighthouse. They can give you pointers on techniques that will help your child succeed!
Skills learned this summer:
- Using a grid pattern to completely wipe down countertops, tables, and wash dishes
- Washing, drying, and folding laundry
- Personal hygiene skills: Brushing teeth, combing/brushing hair, using deodorant
- Making sandwiches, cooking a meal, learning about appliances in the kitchen
- Going to work, staying on task, keeping organized, and more!
Pick two activities from below and have your child practice these two skills throughout this school year!
Young Children:
- Putting away books, toys, stuffed animals, etc.
- Making the bed
- Folding simple clothes and towels
- Picking up dirty laundry and putting in a hamper
