Independent Living Skills Training

Independent Living Skills Training is designed to provide individuals who have recently lost part or all of their vision with the skills needed to perform daily living tasks independently. The up to 8-week course runs Monday – Thursday (9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.). The training program provides instruction in the following areas: Braille, money identification, phone dialing techniques, handwriting guides, adaptive cooking techniques, household cleaning skills, personal management, and psychosocial adjustment to vision loss.

Orientation and Mobility Training

Orientation and Mobility, or travel training, is taught in conjunction with our 8-week Independent Living Skills Training Program. Orientation and Mobility instruction includes the assessment of one’s current level of mobility and focuses on each individual’s specific travel needs with special emphasis on safety. Skills taught include sighted guide; use of remaining senses; orientation or navigation techniques; cane selection; cane techniques; indoor and outdoor travel; use of public transportation; and negotiating steps, escalators, and elevators.
